Swirling reds, burnt browns, and a broken chandelier. The dressing room reeked of inexplicable failure, and its nursery-themed wallpaper made the knot inside Jill's stomach tighten. Who installs pacifier patterns in a cabaret theater?

"Bring gloves," the community service coordinator said. Jill wished for a hazmat suit, scraping away grotesque layers of wall. Black nitrile up to her elbows barred her tingling skin from the soupy red paint streaks.

"Or maybe it's fake blood," she muttered, frowning.

"Not fake," the psycho stated, entering the room. Seeing Jill, they perked up.

"Oh good! More paint."
